Shield Nickels were designed by James Longacre and minted from 1866 to 1883. All coins were made in Philadelphia. 1877 and 1878 Shield Nickels are scarce proof-only dates.

A spectacular blast nickel-white example with a sharp strike, and nearly mark-free surfaces. A wonderful die-crack can be observed between 2 and 3 o'clock on the obverse near the periphery. While common in lower grades with a mintage of 28,890,500, high grade pieces are a real challenge. This example is the single finest graded at NGC. The highest graded at PCGS is at the MS 66+ level. A great coin and a wonderful opportunity to acquire the best.
